Dining in Ponte Vedra Beach
From relaxed to refined, Ponte Vedra Beach has something for every palate.
This world-class pro golf tournament makes for an inexpensive and entertaining day for families.
Warm sunshine, refreshing sea breezes, inviting beaches and one of the biggest events in golf welcome the arrival of spring to Florida’s Historic Coast. For golf’s millions of fans, THE PLAYERS Championship is something special to savor and for the hundreds of thousands lucky enough to attend, it’s six days of excitement and fun that create lasting memories. The competition is always thrilling, the setting is amazing and the experience is truly unforgettable!
First held in 1974 and commonly known as “THE PLAYERS,” this competition is one of golf’s most impressive events. The field for THE PLAYERS consists of 144 players who qualify via criteria that ensures the very best will compete. These include the 50 best players as ranked by World Golf, current FedEx point leaders and winners of the competition for the past five years. The competition is so intense that no one has ever won in back-to-back years. The nearest anyone has come to achieving this feat is a span of six years. In fact, there have been 10 years when the previous year’s winner didn’t make the cut. Of course, the event’s $20 million purse, the second highest on the PGA Tour, is a major incentive for competitors. The winner receives $3.6 million.
Created by legendary designer Pete Dye, this course has served as the home of THE PLAYERS for more than 40 years. It is as welcoming and comfortable for spectators as it is challenging and sometimes frustrating for players. The 7,000-yard course was designed to test every aspect of a player’s game – there are long, medium and short holes no two of which consecutively play in the same direction. And then there’s the 17th Island Green, one of the most challenging and certainly among the most universally recognized and fun holes in golf. For spectators, the visibility is superb, the course is easy to walk for everyone and in keeping with the “stadium” name, comfortable seating is provided for thousands by covered bleachers overlooking holes 10, 12, 13 and 16. Plus, the Mediterranean -style clubhouse is visually stunning!
Food vendors are available throughout the course, ranging from quick-serve food trucks to elegant outdoor dining featuring some of the region’s top restaurants and chefs. There are also Kid Zones with entertaining and energy-burning activities. The PGA TOUR Fan Shop features 36,500 square feet of golf merchandise from the biggest names in the business.
Admission and parking tickets must be purchased in advance. Tuesday and Wednesday (March 12 & 13), admission is $30. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday admissions are $90-$100. Throughout the week, each adult ticket is also good for FREE admission for two youths ages 15 and under. Special military tickets are available, including FREE admission for active duty, retired and reserve members and one dependent for Tuesday, Wednesday and one competitive day. Parking is $15 on Tuesday and Wednesday and $30 for all other days.
In addition to exciting golf, fans can also enjoy more than 40 miles of beautiful beaches, the historic attractions of St. Augustine, outstanding restaurants and accommodations ranging from impressive resorts and hotels to beachfront motels and some of the nation’s most impressive bed and breakfast inns.
