Overview
The Old Jail is a Certified Autism Center™ committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive experience for all visitors, with staff trained to better assist autistic and sensory-sensitive guests. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this unique St. Augustine attraction offers a fascinating look at life behind bars in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Designed in the Romanesque Revival style to resemble a hotel, the historic jail has been carefully preserved and renovated to showcase the stories of some of St. Augustine’s most notorious prisoners. Costumed interpreters bring history to life with engaging tales of the jail and its occupants, and may even book visitors as inmates during the tour. Guests can also explore an impressive collection of historic weapons and artifacts while discovering one of the few surviving jails of its kind in the country. Guided tours depart every 20 minutes beginning at 9 a.m., and free parking is available on site. For those interested in the paranormal, the Old Jail is also a popular stop on St. Augustine ghost tours.
