Florida’s Historic Coast, in partnership with Visit St. Augustine, debuts enhanced Black History App, now available for free on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Black history is an essential part of the story of St. Augustine and Florida's Historic Coast. Spanning more than 450 years, the nation's oldest city is home to a rich and complex history shaped by generations of African-descended individuals whose contributions continue to influence the community today.
To make these stories more accessible, the St. Augustine Black History App, developed by Visit St. Augustine in partnership with Florida's Historic Coast, is available as a free download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
The app combines historical research with self-guided exploration, allowing visitors to discover Black history where it happened. Its "What's Nearby" feature uses your device's location services to highlight nearby historic sites, making it easy to experience history while exploring the destination. Content is thoroughly researched using trusted sources, including Florida Memory, the Library of Congress, the Civil Rights Library of St. Augustine at Flagler College, and Enslaved.org, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The app is organized into four main sections: Events Timeline, Historical People, Historical Places, and Historical Topics. The Events Timeline traces more than four centuries of local history, while the Historical People and Historical Places sections feature biographies, images, timelines, and bibliographies that bring the area's Black heritage to life. The Historical Topics section connects people, places, and events through themes such as the Civil Rights Movement, providing deeper context and insight.
The St. Augustine Black History App is updated regularly with new stories, research, and features, ensuring visitors have access to an engaging and continually evolving resource for exploring one of America's most significant historical destinations.
