Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom

Celebrate Juneteenth on Florida’s Historic Coast
Today Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people. The name is a combination of "June" and "nineteenth", celebrating the anniversary of the order issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas, which was still under Confederate rule. The announcement came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and it marked the end of slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth is a day to celebrate the end of slavery and the progress that has been made in the fight for equality. St. Augustine has its own place in Black history, being one of the earliest settlements for freed African Americans and one of many locations where the struggle for Civil Rights took place.
