Hastings, Florida: Rooted in Agriculture

Southwest of St. Augustine, Hastings offers a look at the agricultural heritage of Florida’s Historic Coast. Its story is one of fertile farmland, hardworking families and a community that continues to adapt while honoring its roots.

From Hotel Farm to Farming Community

Hastings traces its beginnings to the 1890s, when Thomas Horace Hastings established Prairie Garden, a farm created to supply fresh vegetables to Henry Flagler’s grand resort hotels in St. Augustine. With access to the Florida East Coast Railway, the agricultural settlement quickly grew around its farms, packing sheds and rail facilities.

The area’s rich soil proved especially well suited for growing Irish potatoes. Rail connections allowed farmers to ship their crops to markets across the East Coast and Midwest, establishing Hastings as an important center for commercial agriculture.

As the community grew, homes, churches, schools and businesses followed. Hastings officially incorporated as a town in 1909.

Florida’s Potato Capital

By the 1920s, Hastings had earned recognition as the “Potato Capital of Florida.” Early-season potatoes were shipped north in large quantities, supported by bustling packing houses, icing operations and an expanding agricultural workforce.

Although potatoes became closely associated with the town, local growers also produced cabbage, onions and other vegetables. This diversity helped Hastings weather the economic pressures of the Great Depression and meet increased demand for food during World War II.

Agriculture shaped more than the local economy. It influenced school calendars, family traditions and the rhythm of daily life. Planting and harvest seasons brought the entire community together, creating a cultural identity that remains visible in Hastings today.

A Community Adapts

Changes in transportation and farming gradually altered Hastings after World War II. Trucks replaced trains as the primary way to move crops, while mechanization, rising costs and the consolidation of farms transformed agricultural operations.

Despite these changes, farming remained central to the community. Generations of families continued working the surrounding land, while churches, schools and civic organizations served as gathering places.

In 2017, residents voted to dissolve the Town of Hastings, ending its municipal charter. Hastings became an unincorporated community under St. Johns County, but its identity and sense of place endured.

A Historic School Begins a New Chapter

One of the town’s most recognizable landmarks is the former Hastings High School. Built in 1924 in the Mediterranean Revival style, the school served generations of local students and became a center for graduations, performances, civic meetings and community events.

After the school closed in 1985, the building faced demolition. Former students and community advocates successfully worked to preserve it, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Today, the landmark is undergoing a major restoration as part of a new First Coast Technical College campus. The project will return education to the historic building while introducing career training, adult education and workforce programs designed to serve Hastings and western St. Johns County. It is a fitting new chapter for a place that has long represented learning, opportunity and community life.

Rooted in History, Growing Toward the Future

Today’s Hastings remains surrounded by productive farmland, with potatoes and other crops continuing to define the landscape. At the same time, preservation projects, community events and downtown revitalization efforts are creating new reasons to discover this historic agricultural community.

Visitors can experience a quieter, rural side of Florida’s Historic Coast—one where historic buildings, open fields and longstanding traditions tell the story of a community that has continually adapted without losing sight of its roots.

From feeding Henry Flagler’s hotels to preparing a new generation for the workforce, Hastings continues to grow from the same qualities that shaped it more than a century ago: resilience, resourcefulness and a strong sense of community.
