Picturing a Nation: American Art from the Lightner Museum

Picturing a Nation is a major reinstallation of American paintings and sculpture from the Lightner Museum’s permanent collection. From America’s great vistas and natural wonders, to intimate scenes of St. Augustine, Picturing a Nation presents a vibrant vision of America on a local and national scale through late-19th and early 20th century American art. The exhibition opens October 29 and runs through September 30, 2022. Bouke de Vries: War & Pieces at Lightner Museum

This exhibition of London-based Dutch artist Bouke De Vries’ War & Pieces has been described as a “masterwork” by art critics. The monumental artwork, crafted from thousands of fragments of porcelain, reimagines the decorative centerpieces that adorned seventeenth- and eighteenth-century banquet tables. A former conservator of ceramics, Bouke de Vries uses broken ceramics as the primary medium for his artwork, celebrating the “beauty of destruction” through his fragmentary sculptures. The exhibition is supported by the St. Johns County Tourism Development Council.

Sport Fishing Championship NEFMA Bluewater Tournament

The Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) will celebrate 50 years of the Northeast Florida Marlin Association (NEFMA) Blue Marlin Tournament when Atlantic Division action in St. Augustine, Florida. The event is the third in an 11-event competition in which anglers vie for $1 million in cryptocurrency. The SFC is the world’s premier offshore fishing series, consisting of eleven points-based tournaments, culminating in one grand champion angling team. Competitors earn points based on their placement in qualifying events, including St. Augustine’s Blue Marlin Tournament, and additional points for every qualified catch recorded throughout the regular season. Finishing Elements of Painting with Martha Ferguson

Join the Lightner Museum for a Finishing Elements of Painting workshop led by featured June artist, Martha Ferguson. In this workshop Martha will concentrate on the finishing elements of painting. She will demonstrate different techniques on how to achieve a finished piece. Artists will then be given time to paint, and the opportunity to participate in a group critique. Artists may also bring one piece of art for review. Martha will be demonstrating and working in oil paints; however, participants may use the paint medium of their choice. Beach Exploration at the GTM Research Reserve

Join GTM Research Reserve docents from 9-11 a.m. for a beach walk! You will learn about the animals that call the beach their home, as well as seashells and other interesting facts. This is a “Beaches 101” experience that the entire family will enjoy. The hike will begin at the Visitor Center where you will learn about the different habitats on our beautiful seashore.
