What You Need To Know

Fort Mose, founded by Spanish Florida Governor Manuel de Montiano in 1738, was the first legally sanctioned free Black community in the continental United States. This event begins with a reading of the governor's proclamation that provided freedom to Captain Francisco Menendez and his militia men and established Fort Mose. Then, the site will be blessed by Franciscan Friar Don Joseph de Leon. The free event is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
