What You Need To Know

On August 21, the United States will see a solar eclipse. Rangers and volunteers at Fort Matanzas National Monument have several activities planned to commemorate this exciting astronomical event. In preparation for the eclipse, the park is offering activities for the entire family Friday through Monday. There will be an opportunity to earn special eclipse Jr. Ranger stickers and view videos about the history and science of solar eclipses. Also, free glasses specifically designed for viewing the eclipse will be available. On Monday a ranger presentation about the history and cultural perspectives of solar eclipses will take place at the Visitor Center at 1 p.m. The partial eclipse will begin at 1:17 p.m. and the maximum eclipse of 90 percent will be visible at 2:49 p.m. The event will conclude by 4:15 p.m. Admission into the park is free. The park is open 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily.
