St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival Pairs History with Varietals

The St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival is a four-day event, September 8 – 11, which offers something for everyone who love Spanish wine.
The festival kicks off on Thursday, September 8, at noon with a luncheon at First Coast Technical College to benefit the Fresh Start program for transitioning homeless who are embarking on new culinary arts careers.
Friday evening features the Vino Veritas at The Treasury on the Plaza. Enjoy premium wines with Spanish wine experts. This year’s “Truth in Wine” extravaganza features Spanish wines paired with seafood, caviar, steaks and butler-passed Spanish hors d’oeuvres with live Spanish music and dance. You’ll also receive American-made wine glass, laser etched with the Festival logo.

New for this year is the Cochinillo Asado, suckling pig roast, at the Mission Nombre de Dios Saturday from 1 – 4 p.m. This suckling pig roast is accompanied by fine Spanish wine and beer, and promises to be a picnic to top all picnics. Suckling pigs will be pit roasted in the Spanish tradition by the lead chefs from Michael’s Tasting Room, Culinary Outfitters, The Raintree and The Reef, and each restaurant will offer specialty side dishes.
A unique way to experience wine is the The Batalla de Vino on Saturday 4-4:30 p.m. at the Mission Nombre de Dios. The Batalla is a team competition where each team’s goal is to PROTECT THE KING OR QUEEN! Each team of five (men and/or women 21+ years old) will try to get other teams’ kings and queens as red with wine as possible while protecting its royalty. The team with the whitest-clothed king or queen at the end of the competition wins.
Finally, the Grand Tasting is Sunday afternoon at The Treasury on the Plaza and includes 100+ Spanish wines. Tickets are $25 for the luncheon, $150 for Vino Veritas, $10 Batalla individual, $100 per team of five, $65 for Cochinillo Asado and $75 for the Grand Tasting. An etched commemorative glass is included in the Vino Veritas and Grand Tasting ticket prices. All proceeds benefit local St. Augustine charities.
