Put these Best Burgers on Your Bucket List

When visiting Florida's Historic Coast, look to the locals to find the best restaurants in St. Augustine.

While you’re looking for things to do in St. Augustine, be sure to stop for a bite. Here’s a list of a dozen great local burgers selected for their quality, terrific toppings, fresh ingredients, healthy choices -- and some that are just more than a mouthful.

Combine a mountain of fresh seafood with a perfectly grilled patty and you’ll have the Shipwreck Burger at the Beachcomber at St. Augustine Beach. It’s a perfectly grilled hamburger patty with a mountain of local, fried shrimp and tartar sauce on top. Bonus: you can enjoy it oceanside!

Head west to farm country where you’ll find Jim’s Place in Elkton, where the signature Mushroom Swiss Burger tops a perfect patty with Swiss cheese and steamy, perfectly sautéed mushrooms.

Gas Full Service Restaurant has been featured on the Food Network, because all burgers feature grass-fed beef patties that you can customize with creative toppings. Try the Sara Burger topped with a fried green tomato, Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar and Habanero Jack cheeses, lettuce, pickle and onion.

If you’re looking for a vegan or vegetarian option, The Floridian makes a great black bean or sweet potato burger. The popular restaurant’s Dixie burger also will meet all of your vegan, vegetarian, Paleo, gluten-free or other special dietary needs!

Keeping with the healthy burger theme is the Sunlight Burger at Present Moment Café. The open-faced mushroom nut burger is served over sprouts, a sliced tomato, cashew cheese and caramelized onions. And it’s served with a side of dehydrated corn chips.

Ice, Ice, Baby! While there are many great burgers in town, you’d be hard pressed to find a meal in a more historic, architecturally rich place – The Ice Plant. Once the area’s first ice plant, you can now find great cocktails and a half-pound burger that combines a buttery bun, homemade bacon-chive aioli and a grilled grass-fed beef patty.

With a name like Burger Buckets, it has to be good. Tucked away in the Red Sightseeing Train Station, Burger Buckets serves up some of the most eclectic burgers around, including the Fudge Bacon Burger with its famous maple peppered bacon fudge. Be sure to put this on your “bucket list.”

One Twenty Three Burger House is family owned by the Tringalis, who also operate one of the most popular pizza places in town, Carmelo's. So the Pizza Burger is the obvious choice, featuring an 8-oz. prime patty topped with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, pepperoni and marinara sauce.

The World Famous Oasis has been a popular local watering hole for generations. In fact, every burger is named for a local customer. Try the spicy Chip’s Burger topped with grilled onions, jalapeno peppers, green bell peppers, banana peppers and provolone on a Kaiser roll.

Does meatloaf on bread count as a burger? If so, the Back 40 Urban Café serves a tangy meatloaf sandwich topped with bacon, cheddar cheese and homemade brown sugar ketchup just like mom used to make.

At Prohibition Kitchen, the PK Signature Burger is a special house-grind blend of short rib, brisket and sirloin with log-smoked bacon, red onion jam, fried egg and Red Dragon cheese

Usually it’s the toppings that make the burger. But at Obi’s Filling Station, the Spare Tire is served between two Krispy Kreme donuts.

There are so many things to do (and so many places to eat!) so plan a trip now to work through your St. Augustine burger bucket list.
