St. George Street is the heart of St. Augustine, lined with quaint shops, cozy bistros, art galleries and gift shops … but no traffic. This pedestrians-only street gives you a feel for what life was like when the Old City was first settled, but it’s only the beginning. Explore what’s off the main drag of St. George Street when visiting St. Augustine.

More than 40 miles of white sandy shores line St. Augustine and its surrounding areas. A favorite is St. Augustine Beach, thanks to its laid-back feel, impressive fishing pier and nearby beachside restaurants. Be sure to check out the St. Johns County Ocean and Fishing Pier. Explore Fort Matanzas, a small fortified watchtower the Spanish built to guard the southern entrance to St. Augustine. Admission to the park at Fort Matanazas National Monument is free, and there's only a small fee to ride the ferry. (8635 A1A Hwy. S., St. Augustine, 904-471-0116)

Fort Mose Historic State Park is the first free African settlement in North America. Though nothing remains of the fort itself, the site and visitor center memorialize the slaves who fled the American colonies. There's free admission to the park grounds, which are open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., 365 days a year. (15 Fort Mose Trail, St. Augustine, 904-823-2232)

The Governor’s House Cultural Center & Museum gallery hosts free rotating exhibits. A lobby exhibit explains the rich history of the Government House and its prominent location in the St. Augustine Historic District. It's open to the public daily from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (48 King St., St. Augustine, 904-823-2240)

Historic church tours of Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church, Mission Nombre de Dios and Cathedral Basilica are offered as well. Check church schedules for tour days and times.
  
San Sebastian Winery offers free tours and tastings daily from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday - Saturday and 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday. Free Events

Nights of Lights, the Saturday before Thanksgiving through January: The annual Nights of Lights holiday lights festival is a favorite of everyone who attends. Visit St. Augustine when more than 3 million twinkling white lights create a festive atmosphere, decorating everything from the Lightner Museum to Plaza de la Constitución. Lights display throughout St. Augustine nightly.

Music by the Sea, Wednesdays May through September: This free weekly concert series at St. Johns County Ocean Pier Park features a variety of musical genres from 7 - 9 p.m. Bring a beach chair or blanket and, starting at 6 p.m., dinner is offered to all concert-goers for $10 or less. Concert-goers are encouraged to carpool or ride the shuttle from St. Augustine Beach City Hall. (350 A1A Beach Blvd., St. Augustine Beach, 904-347-8007)

Concerts in the Plaza, Thursdays May through August: From 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday night through August, Concerts in the Plaza offer free live music under the oak trees in St. Augustine’s Plaza de la Constitución. First Friday Art Walk, 5 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of every month: During the monthly First Friday Art Walk, the art galleries of St. Augustine feature new exhibits, refreshments and live music at more than 20 locations. The event is held rain or shine inside member galleries and is a free, self-guided walking tour with maps are available at participating galleries. (832-779-2781)

Militia Muster and Training at Fort Mose, first Saturday of each month from 9 to 11:30 a.m.: Visit Fort Mose to be transported back to the 18th century during Militia Muster and Training at Fort Mose. Learn from the members of the Fort Mose Militia as they practice firing drills and demonstrate how to use historic weapons. The park is open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission to the park is free and admission to the Visitor Center is $2 per person. (15 Fort Mose Trail, St. Augustine, 904-823-2232)

Pet Walk Pup Crawl, second Saturday of the month: Explore the timeless streets of St. Augustine with your pets during the Pet Walk Pup Crawl. This one-hour guided walking tour covers several square blocks of the downtown plaza area. All pets must be leashed and all city pet ordinances followed. Tour departs at 10 a.m. from the Tour Saint Augustine office and reservations are required. (4 Granada St., St. Augustine, 904-825-0087)

Tolomato Cemetery Guided Tours, third Saturday of the month: On Tolomato Cemetery Guided Tours you can explore the oldest extant planned cemetery in Florida, with burials from the First Spanish Period (1565-1763). Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. Tours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (14 Cordova St., St. Augustine, 904-257-3273)

Black Heritage & Civil Rights Walking Tour, third Saturday of the month: Join a St. Augustine Black Heritage & Civil Rights Walking Tour to see historical sites in St. Augustine, where more than 400 years of African American history live. You will also visit Lincolnville, established by freedmen following the American Civil War and now on the National Register of Historic Places. This 1.5-hour tour departs from Tour Saint Augustine at 4 p.m. Advance reservations required; individual bookings only. (4 Granada St., St. Augustine, 904-825-0087)

Uptown Saturday Night, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. on the last Saturday of the month: Uptown Saturday Night is the perfect event for fashionistas, art lovers and antiques shoppers, combining a festive party atmosphere with special deals in the shops along St. Augustine's San Marco Avenue. Many participating shops also serve refreshments. Mission Nombre de Dios provides free parking most months. (904-829-6831)

Historic Walking Tour, fourth Saturday of the month: History comes alive as you get a personal view of the Old City’s narrow brick streets on a Historic Walking Tour. A licensed, professional guide will share more than 400 years of St. Augustine’s past during this 1.5-hour history exploration.
