The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, a 16-acre outdoor amphitheater located just across the Intracoastal Waterway from St. Augustine, is a fun destination for all ages.
As a performing arts venue that can hold up to 4,100 concertgoers, the amphitheater plays host to big-name musical acts. The venue hosts shows that appeal to the youngest viewers (Yo Gabba Gabba Live!), tweens and teens (Victoria Justice), country music fans (Alan Jackson), rock aficionados (Third Day, Chicago) and more. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre doubles as an open-air movie theater. The Night Owl Cinema Series, when a movie and parking are free, are held on select Fridays. Most of the movies are family-friendly.
If you’re in the market for fresh produce, baked goods, hand-crafted items and plants, head to the amphitheater any Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the Old City Farmers Market.
Come the end of the year, the amphitheater gets into the holiday spirit. From late November through early January, the venue is transformed into a winter wonderland. Kids of all ages don skates and take a spin around the ice rink. Horse-drawn sleigh rides take passengers past holiday scenes and twinkling lights. Every evening, Santa stops by to visit and listen to gift requests. And a nightly snowfall puts everyone in a festive mood.
The amphitheater was built in 1965 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest permanent European settlement. In the mid 2000s, it was refurbished. The new facility includes a conference room, four concession stands, a merchandise area, a large plaza and an arboretum of walking trails.
At nearby Anastasia State Park, which fronts both the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, visitors can camp, picnic, lounge on the beach, swim, kayak, canoe, fish, walk nature trails or visit an archaeological site (it’s where coquina was mined to build Castillo de San Marcos). A concession in the park rents bikes, canoes, sailboards, paddleboards and kayaks.
