15 Fort Mose Trail
St. Augustine, FL 32084

Fort Mose, founded by Spanish Florida Governor Manuel de Montiano in 1738, was the first legally sanctioned free Black town in the continental United States. This event begins with a reading of the governor's proclamation extending freedom to Captain Francisco Menendez and his fellow militia men and establishing Fort Mose. Then, the site will be blessed by Franciscan Friar Don Joseph de Leon. There will be a scholarly presentation in the Visitors Center followed by a Middle Passage Remembrance Ceremony, which honors the thousands of people who were lost at sea or risked the journey south to Spanish Florida in search of their freedom. The free event is from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
